Honour Killing

Honour Killing as defined by wikipedia.org is: the homicide of a member of a family or social group by other members, due to the belief of the perpetrators that the victim has brought dishonor upon the family or community. In today's news, I stumbled upon a news story with a headline reading, Afghan couple killed three teenage daughters in honour killing.


As I am reading the story of these three girls, ages 19,17 and 13, it saddens me that brutal practices such as this are still occurring on a regular basis. Whether this was actually the result of honour killings is irrelevant to me, because I am upset by this story regardless. I have not had the privilege to be a parent yet, but I cannot imagine having children and wanting to harm them in any way. (Yes, I believe that bringing a child into the world should be a privilege and not a right.)


However, if it is true that this multiple homicide was in reaction to the parents' ideology that these children were a "disgrace" and that they dated boys and wore inappropriate clothing, then shame on them. I am not Islamic, but I simply cannot believe that when Muhammad originally established Islam that he intended for the words of the Quran to allow acts such as this. Deep disgust and rage towards mankind are the emotions that I am filled with as I hear stories of this nature. I believe that Justice Robert Maranger of the Ontario Superior Court said it best, "It is difficult to conceive of a more despicable, more heinous, more HONOURLESS crime."
